In September of 2015 the ‘Sustainable Development Goals’ (SDG) were made in an effort to to “reduce poverty and increase well-being, without destroying the Earth ("Sustainable development goals - United Nations", n.d.).” Australia is committed to global sustainable development. This also correlates with the Melbourne Declaration on Educational Goals for Young Australians which highlighted the essentiality of students becoming active citizens who “work for the common good, in particular sustaining and improving natural and social environments" (Ministerial Council on Education, Employment, Training and Youth Affairs, 2008). This depicts the need for students to learn about sustainable practices to support the “long-term ecological balance” (Dictionary.com, 2015) of our world.
Through this cross-curricular priority, students acquire the knowledge, ethical awareness, values and world views required to make certain that there are adequate resources to sustain everyone forever. Therefore, embedding sustainable practices as a whole school approach is beneficial for students learning.
The ‘School Sustainability Committee’ has formulated a sustainability resource package that can be implemented and adapted to meet the diverse needs of each individual school. This plan can be utilised to meet the overarching goals of the ‘SDG’ and ‘The Melbourne Declaration’ to achieve national and global sustainability.
