Waste Minimisation Policy
By Johan Boonzaier
Rationale
We want our school to be a place of wise stewardship by reducing the amount we purchase, consume and throw away.
Scope
Some items are purchased and consumed because they are essential for the running of the school (e.g. pencils, desks) whilst others may be a matter of convenience (e.g. paper plates) or the by-product of consumption (e.g. wrapping, packaging).
Our purchasing and consumption is sometimes greater than necessary. This could be due to mismanagement (e.g. losing or wasting things), time shortage (e.g. not waiting to properly turn off a computer) or a lack of knowledge (e.g. not understanding why it is important to turn off air-conditioners).
We aim to be conscious of the way goods are purchased, used and discarded so we can target reduction strategies and be faithful stewards of our resources.

CONSUMPTION
We aim to reduce consumption in all areas and to live more within the means of the planet.
DISPOSAL

APPRECIATION, GRATITUDE AND THRIFT
At a time when ‘‘more, bigger, faster” appears to dominate culture, we aim to promote appreciation, gratitude and thrift. We aim to see all members of our school community valuing what we have.
