Step 1:
Ensure you have enough knowledge about the importance of recycling in schools to prove to the principal how/why putting recycle bins within the school and eating area would benefit the students and the cleanliness of the school environment. Hold a meeting with all appropriate stakeholders and the sustainability action plan team to discuss the education of recycling. Brainstorm ideas of how to incorporate ‘recycling’ into classroom lessons and student’s everyday lives. Get permission from the principal for these lessons and procedures to start taking place throughout the school and in the classroom.
Responsible: Cleaner, Principal, BSM, Teachers Time frame: By week 3, Term 1 |
Step 2:
With permission from the principal, reach out to teachers to incorporate the importance of recycling waste into their lessons. Educate students to reduce waste first, reuse where possible, and then recycle. Display posters around the classroom and school to show what ‘recycling’ is, displaying different free recycling programs.
|
The following lessons can be implemented in the classroom to improve student’s knowledge on recycling waste:
Waste Not Want Not Trash into Treasure Having posters and lessons, will motivate the students to take part in maintaining a clean environment. In whole school assembly, have an Environmentalist professional speak to students about recycling and display video. (see below). Ensure the whole school is on board and participating, to make a noticeable and outstanding difference in the cleanliness of the school grounds. Responsible: Principal, Teachers, Environmentalist, Cleaner. Time frame: By week 6, Term 1 |
Step 3:
Once students are educated on the use of recycle bins and how to properly recycle rubbish, Implement recycle bins throughout the school and in the students eating areas. Teacher on lunch duty will be expected to encourage and remind students to use the recycling bins correctly when disposing their waste. Implement free recycling programs to the whole school e.g. Clean up Australia day, Cash for cans and Earth Day. Have cleaners and teachers monitor and report change and progress of students recycling and overall cleanliness of the school grounds. Responsible: Teachers, Cleaners Time Frame: By week 8, Term 1 |
Step 4:
Create a recycling reward program; Each classes progress will be recorded weekly, each week one class will be rewarded for recycling the most waste within their classroom cohort. The classroom winner each week will be rewarded at assembly with a five-dollar tuck shop voucher for every student in the winning class. The year level that has won the most weekly prizes by the end of term will be rewarded with a morning tea party on the last week of the term to celebrate. Create a term report of weekly progress at conclusion of each term to show progress of improvement of school environment. The report should demonstrate before and after results of the impact the recycling bins have had on the school environment. E.g: At each weekly assembly students can be showed their progress so far. This can be displayed in a way to demonstrate the difference they have made in the environment by how much they have recycled. E.g.; Recycling x amount of paper has saved x amount of trees. Responsible: Teachers, Principal, Cleaner. BSM Timeframe: Final week of Term 1 |
