Why did we create the Sustainability Package for Schools?
The mission was to provide a committee with the tools to create a package suitable for improving and increasing sustainability areas of a school. It was also aimed at educating students, families and the community on ways to reduce, reuse and recycle, to provide a safe environment and healthy environment for our children to grow and flourish. |
What Areas of Sustainability Were Covered?
Human Sustainability: This is the preservation of human life and was covered extensively with the construction of a vegetable garden and chicken coop, healthy eating through the tuckshop and the health and safety plan. Economic Sustainability: This process involves having enough capital (finances) for a period of time. Financial aspects of our package involve the use of fundraising, saving money through recycling, reusing and reducing waste, book sales and the creation of reports to review the school savings. Social Aspect of Sustainability: This involves the ability of a group of people or community to create structures that will sustain society now and in the future. By working together in our committee, we have shown that we can communicate, and get along, for a sole purpose - creating a resource package. The weebly also involves a global aspect by keeping generations informed via an online tool. Political Aspect of Sustainability: This is shown in each plan, where there is acknowledgment towards the members of the committee, who can assist in achieving each step. The political aspect is about understanding who has the power to assist and make decisions and who controls the resources to put our plans into action. Environmental Sustainability: Our dependence on natural resources is a high factor in sustainability. We rely on nature for our water needs, food and the air we breath. We also create our dwellings (homes) and work environments from nature's gifts. The importance of revegetation and our need to give back to nature is shown in our action plans on this website.
